Inspired by the book Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, Richmond artist Kathryn Wysockey Johnson created beautiful watercolor and silhouette backgrounds for the ends of the shelves at the library. The community then took over by creating, coloring and crafting many different styles of butterflies to hang on and around the shelves. We have loved the color, variety and beauty of this community art installation for the months of March and April, but soon it will be time for these lovely winged beauties to be on their way. So many individuals (over 200) have contributed a butterfly already and before the project takes flight there is still opportunity for folks to add a touch of their own inner butterfly to the scene. If you haven’t yet seen this community art project, be sure to visit the library before May 17.
